{UAH} IS THE OPPOSITION READY FOR THE CONSEQUENCES OF DEFIANCE?

By Apostle Solomon Magezi

As Uganda prepares for yet another election next year, members of the opposition are at it again, acting and urging their supporters to behave in a manner that doesn't promote a peaceful electoral process. Ironically, it is the opposition that has been accusing the ruling NRM government of using violence against them, especially when they are promoting acts of defiance–acting in disregard of the law.

The main objective of governments world over is to make sure that there's no other group that wants to violently displace them. It is therefore incumbent upon political institutions, especially political parties, to demonstrate that their activities are peaceful and carried out within the confines of the law.

The onus thus falls on mandated State organs to ensure that all political processes are peaceful and lawful. Whether or not there is political will, I want us to reflect on how our parliament has been behaving whenever they have contentious issues. Have they behaved violently, calmly, or in a lackadaisical manner?

It is important to note that the behavior of political leaders has a profound effect on the behavior the society. So, whether or not there is political will on the part of opposition parties, their leaders should be able to offer leadership if they are willing to see a peaceful electoral process.

As for the government, they should continue to ensure that the electoral process is peaceful and should clamp down hard on all those that might want to ferment hatred, violence, and anarchy.

The government derives that mandate, first and foremost from the constitution of the Republic of Uganda, and second and most importantly, from the people of Uganda.
