The National Unity Platform (NUP) Kawempe North parliamentary flag bearer Muhammad Ssegirinya could not hide his anger Tuesday night as three MPs who subscribe to the Kamwokya-based party ganged up against him, making it clear to him he should quit the race to the 11th Parliament for the incumbent Latif Ssebagala Sengendo.
Weeks ago, Ssebagala declined NUP's ticket to challenge Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago of the main opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) in the interest of the wider opposition. And on Sunday, during the burial ceremony of his brother Al Hajji Nasser Ntege Sebaggala in Kisaasi, Kampala, Latif announced he would return to the race to retain his Kawempe North seat following consultations.
Ssegirinya and Ssebagala faced off in NBS TV's Barometer Akasameeme Show hosted by Zambaali Blasio Mukasa. Also on the popular show were Mukono Municipality MP Betty Nambooze Bakireke and Rubaga North's Moses Kasibante. Both Kasibante and Nambooze argued that there was no point in fronting opposition candidates against incumbent MPs who were in the struggle to end President Yoweri Museveni's rule. Kasibante, who is yet to forgive NUP for denying him its flag and giving it to KCCA Speaker Abubaker Kawalya, continued his attacks on the vetting exercise procedure that NUP used to throw him out of the race for reelection to the constituency he currently represents.
Nambooze drew examples from the western world to emphasize why opposition MPs shouldn't be blamed for overstaying in the House as representatives of the people, saying seniority was not only key for the institution of Parliament but also for the struggle against the Museveni government. Like she had predicted, Nambooze was misunderstood by some, including Ssegirinya who noted that he was disappointed that the Mukono Municipality legislator seemed to say that it was okay for Museveni to overstay in power because Uganda still needed to tap into his wealth of experience.
Ssegirinya's fury was further stoked by Ssebagala's revelation that he still needed to represent the people of Kawempe North for another 10 years, meaning that the Kawempe Lord Councilor would have to wait until 2031. Nambooze argued that there was need to add value and experience in the position of KCCA councilors, suggesting that it was not a bad place for Ssegirinya to stay. Earlier Ssegirinya had dismissed the argument that one needed a lot of knowledge and experience to be an MP, submitting that the roles of a Councilor were not any different from those of a Member of Parliament. Nambooze used this very line of argument to tell the Kawempe Councilor to return to his role at City Hall, something Ssegirinya out rightly rejected, saying he had asked his people to give him only one term as Councillor. Claiming he would have rallied behind his opponent if NUP had denied him the flag, Ssegirinya said he was grateful to Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu aka Bobi Wine for forming a platform that has made it possible to expose selfish politicians like Ssebagala and Nambooze whom he accused of wanting to overstay in Parliament the way Museveni has overstayed in power.
