{UAH} HOPE AS MPS APPROVE SHS110BN LOAN FOR EXTENSION OF CLEAN WATER TO VILLAGES

Dwellers in just over 700 villages spread across 20 districts of Uganda will see water extended near their homes in the next five years after Parliament approved a proposal by government to borrow $30m (about Shs110bn) from Exim Bank of India to finance the supply and installation of solar powered Water Pumping Systems as part of efforts to increase access to clean and safe water, and improve the health of Ugandans given the importance of water.

MPs approved government's proposal for the multi-billion loan after debating a report from the Committee on National Economy, chaired by Nakaseke North MP and former Finance, Planning and Economic Development Minister Syda Bbumba. The Bbumba committee okayed the acquisition of the loan but insisted the Ministry of Water and Environment must implement the recommendations members suggested to ensure full and timely utilization of funds in order to save tax payers from parting with billions in interest rate, management and commitment fees accruing to the loan that will mature in 12 years (with a repayment period of 10 years and two years as grace period).
