DID GENERAL OYITE OJOK BLOW HIMSELF UP MID-AIR?
On 2nd December 1983 when the then most powerful, most revered and most-plotted-against commander crashed and burned to ashes in that tragic Luwero Triangle helicopter accident, Uganda's history witnessed a significant turning point. His death would forever shape the future of Uganda.
Like the death of Brigadier Okoya (an earlier commander in another of Obote-led government in 1970), General Oyite Ojok's death a decade later in Obote II did not also find closure. However in a turn of events, 35 years later today, revelations that Ojok blew his helicopter to avoid being kidnapped by his fellow passengers are increasingly gaining credibility.
Captain Rufino Akena, one of Oyite Ojok's closest aides was aboard an escort helicopter that was flying close to Ojok's gunship. Throughout the flight, Akena and Pilot Oringi (both men still living) monitored the goings-on in their boss' helicopter through the communication systems that linked the two helicopters.
Akena's book, "I SAW OYITE OJOK DIE" reads like a thriller
