BAZILIO THREATENED TO OVERTHROW OBOTE II

Former LC5 Chairman Lira District, Franco Ojur was an important intelligence officer in Obote II; he often worked in Obote's security detail. In his contribution to the book, "President Obote Great Man Great Mistakes", Ojur narrated a chilling rebuke he endured from one of Obote's disloyal commanders Brigadier Bazilio Okello in Gulu in 1984 just a year before Obote fell again. In 1984, Bazilio had been transferred from Kampala to Gulu to command the Northern Brigade of the UNLA on suspicion that he was in cahoots with the Bush War rebels. Coincidentally, that was the time when Ojur travelled from Kampala to Gulu on a security mission. So, when Bazilio learnt that one of Obote's aides had arrived in Gulu, he insisted on meeting him face to face.

During the meeting, Bazilio sternly rebuked Ojur and audaciously warned him that he was capable of capturing Kampala within days. "Un uryema ki Kampala, utamo ni Kampala dong bor tutwal? Aromo oo Kampala kunnu i nino adek keken." (You (Obote's faction) have removed me from Kampala; do you think Kampala is too far? I can reach there within three days only.)

Apart from Ojur, many other people who worked closely with Obote or studied him carefully also contributed to the book. These include Hon Omara Atubo, Hon Aggrey Awori, Hon Retired Colonel Tony Otoa, Captain Rufino Akena aka Kampanyola and many others.
