{UAH} TOUGH TIMES FOR BOBI WINE AS SECURITY AGENCIES ARREST SCORES IN KAMWOKYA OFFICE RAID

By Mulengera Reporter

Security agencies, including Uganda Police Force's Field Force Unit, on Wednesday raided the Kamwokya-based office of Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine's National Unity Platform (NUP), arresting some party members and confiscating promotional materials such as the controversial red berets.

The Wednesday raid, which happened after Bobi Wine had addressed reporters on his plan to mobilize support by opening up NUP regional offices starting next week, saw police seal off the offices of the controversially acquired party, blocking entry and exit into the same. Although it was not readily clear why security raided the offices, the action has been linked to a move by the State to enforce a ban on the use of the red beret that Bobi Wine's NUP and People Power have continued to use despite warnings issued by the military last year.

Bobi Wine's party has in recent weeks faced internal strife, some of which is suspected to have let the state in on NUP secrets. A case on the validity of the processes undertaken to acquire NUP is pending determination by court, after some of the original party's founders cited irregularities in the name change and leadership transfer procedures. Moses Kibalama Nkonge, the former NUP president shocked Bobi Wine's supporters when he appeared in a video recorded at night, claiming Kyagulanyi had failed to pay him $5m for helping him acquire the party he told him he planned to use to secure billions from foreign funders to facilitate his campaign. It is said security agencies have been hunting for documentary evidence to pin the man from Magere for seeking funding to undermine a lawfully elected government using both conventional and unconventional means.

Raids on opposition political party offices is not new. Police has in recent years raided the Najjanankumbi-based Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) office and blocked the main opposition party's activities, especially those involving main opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye. One of the most famous raids was one that happened during the 2016 elections when security agencies confiscated forms, hard and software used at a parallel tally
