{UAH} WHY THE SNAIL IS SO SLOW
WHY THE SNAIL IS SO SLOW
1. Long ago, there was a famine throughout the land and all the animals got hungry. Many died, but some stayed alive by preying on other animals. Mr. Snail could not prey on other animals because they were all stronger than he was. So Mr. Snail got thinner and weaker.
2. One evening. Mr. Snail got dressed and decided to go for a walk. While he was passing a neighbour's house, he smelt porridge. He thought that the owner of the house might give him some. When Mr. Snail got into the house he didn't find anybody at home. He was so hungry that he climbed up the side of the pot and began to eat. The porridge was so thick that Mr. Snail couldn't get out of it. When the owner of the house returned, he found that Mr. Snail wasn't able to move. He was afraid of what the owner might do to him.
3. Mr. Snail had got into the house without permission and had stolen some food, but the owner forgave him. The owner understood that Mr. Snail had done this only because he was dying of hunger. He was sorry for poor Mr. Snail. He got him out of the porridge pot, and let him go. But the owner forgot to clean off the porridge and so Mr. Snail could not move.
4. "What shall I do Mr. Snail shouted as he struggled to move. He had struggled for a long time when Mr. Caterpillar, one of his good friends, appeared. He looked at Mr Snail, wondering how he had got into that trouble. What's the matter, my friend? Are you making mud for the walls of your new house?" asked Mr. Caterpillar.
"Oh, no" said Mr. Saail, "I'm not doing that."
"Then what are you doing?" You look so dirty."
5. At first, Mr. Snail didn't answer because he didn't want to say that he had got into a house and stolen some food. But he was afraid Mr. Caterpillar would find out what had happened. He said, "I'm playing a game. Don't stop to watch me. I'm sure you have more important work elsewhere."
6. Mr. Caterpillar said good-bye to Mr. Snail and went away. Mr. Snail tried again to clean the porridge off. But he didn't succeed. Since that time snails haven't been able to move fast. They always leave a trail that looks like porridge.
