{UAH} Why were Soviet cars so terrible? Was communism mostly to blame?
Trust me: Russian cars and trucks are jewels of engineering and mechanics.
Not because of communism but in spite of communism.
Russian cars are one of many examples of the genius of Russian people, not of communism.
You wouldn't believe the circumstances they work in: from deserts to Siberia, in roads that you wouldn't dream of in a nightmare. They are abused in every way possible, a Lada maybe be a taxi in the morning and a tractor in the afternoon. And many of them are both in fact. Most of them are older then your great-great grandfather. And they still work in better conditions then many western made cars with a few years of service (I could show you pictures of them, side by side...)
