{UAH} I'm an American citizen, born in the USA. I wonder, if I was to pack my family up and head for the Canadian border and ask for political asylum, would the Canadian government grant me said asylum?

You can make the claim, you'll just be rejected.

Upon arriving at the border you just tell the border agent you wish to claim asylum. You and your family will then be searched for a few hours, your car shredded, your phones seized, etc. and you'll be questioned by Canadian Border Services Agents at which time you'll be asked if you want to make an asylum claim.

If you say yes, you'll be taken to a CBSA detention facility. Within 24 hours you'll be assigned a hearing in front of an immigration judge. (If you have minor children, that will typically happen within hours). At the hearing you can then try to explain to a judge how you are in fear of your life and how it is likely you would be killed if returned to the United States — at the same time some CBSA officers will be showing the judge your Facebook posts, your text messages, conversations they had with the FBI and local police, your neighbours, the contents of your vehicle, etc. that you obviously aren't in fear of your life.

A judge will then rule that you have no legitimate reason to be in fear of your life if returned to the US and order you returned to the US. CBSA will walk you to the border. They will then revoke your visa exemption status and issue a five year ban on returning to Canada.
