{UAH} GOVT ORDERS PUBLIC ACCOUNTING OFFICERS TO STOP PURCHASE OF OFFICE CHRISTMAS GIFTS

The finance ministry has directed all accounting officers of government ministries, departments, agencies and local governments not to buy Christmas gifts and hampers or organize Christmas and end of year parties.

This is intended to reduce expenditure during the festive season which will save over 20b shillings.

The deputy secretary to the treasury, Patrick Ocailap, also directed that accounting officers should not engage in the printing of Christmas cards, diaries, calendars and anything related to such expenditures.

Speaking to Nettech Media, Ocailap advised the accounting officers to use the money to purchase COVID 19 mitigating items such as sanitisers, face masks and temperature guns for the staff.

"The economy is faced with expenditure pressures and as such the government is undertaking efficiency measures which entail adjusting spending during this festive season," Ocailap explained.

He noted that the directive is in respect to all accounting officers who derive their expenditures from the consolidated fund and those that had already secured the items, Ocailap said accounting officers should decide what to do with it.
