I'm Ready To Advise Google And Facebook Not To Block Bobi Wine Leaning Online Platforms Like I Helped TVO – Human Rights Lawyer Opio Vows After Google Asked UCC For Court Order…

The head of Communication and Public Affairs of the American Company Google in Africa has said that they are not ready to block Bobi Wine leaning online platforms.

Responding to a media email, Dorothy Ooko noted that the only way they can block the said online media outlets should be by a valid Court Order not just a letter from Uganda's media regulation body Uganda Communication Commission (UCC).

"It is very hard to just have a channel removed due to a government request. We always follow local law, but it would have to be a valid Court order. The letters just shows what the UCC submitted to the Embassy. They are not Court orders" she noted.

On 9th December 2020, UCC wrote to both Google and Facebook requesting to block TMO famously owned by senior presidential advisor on media Joseph Tamale Mirundi, Fred Lumbuye, Trending channel Uganda, Uganda Yaffe, Uganda news updates, Ghetto TV, Busesa media updates, Uganda empya, Map mediya TV, KKTV, Namugongo media, JB Muwonge and Bobi Wine 2021.

UCC claimed that their letter is based on the several complaints from Ugandans especially the Internal affairs ministry, Uganda police and others.

However, when contacted for a comment, Celebrated Human Rights lawyer Nicholas Opio vowed to guide the tech giants Facebook and Google on the controversial letter.

He stated that the UCC letter lacks premise, an abuse of due process and curtailment of human rights in the context of political campaigns.

"As someone who has acted for Facebook in the TVO case in Ireland, I can confirm that the sites cited in the UCC letter haven't violated any community standards or haven't been found by a court of law to have done so. The letter is thus a fuss over nothing but prejudice," Opio said.

He advised the tech giants to disregard UCC letters because they are very partisan and intended to curtail legitimate politician campaigns.
