{UAH} *In defence of the Baganda over voting for Hon Kyagulanyi*
*In defence of the Baganda over voting for Hon Kyagulanyi*
Many times, when we talk about sectarianism, we are tagged as being sectarian by those practicing it instead.
Unfortunately the things we have always swept under the carpet or under the bed have started smelling & we can no longer hide them except to bring them on table & discuss them.
NRM pundits & Gen Museveni have opened a war on Baganda over the performance of National Unity Platform in Buganda where the party swept most of the Parliamentary seats. Museveni and his people have termed this as sectarianism.
Of course it's intriguing how the party could get over 55 MPs from one subregion & fail to raise 5MPs in other 12 sub regions of the country.
However, we go wrong when we start addressing a consequence instead of a cause by blaming people for voting in this way instead of asking how we reached at this point. We need to address this as an effect and not the cause.
I also reject the narrative that when Bobi Wine wins in Buganda it is sectarianism but when Museveni gets 99% from Kiruhura it is not sectarianism!
That when Bobi Wine wins 55MPs from Buganda out of over 100 seats that he is sectarian but when NRM gets over 100 seats out of 120 in Western that it is not sectarianism! It would be misrepresenting facts to blackmail the Baganda.
It's not also true that people who voted for these NUP MPs are necessarily Baganda,
there are many other tribes that vote from Buganda who could have as well voted for NUP.
In 1996, Paul Kawanga Semwogerere was a muganda & a candidate, Gen Museveni won in Buganda. In 2001, there was Muhammed Mayanja Kibirige a candidate from Buganda, Baganda voted for Museveni & Besigye. In 2006 Buganda had
Hon Sebana Kizito, Miria Kalule Obote & Dr Abed Bwanika, Buganda voted for Museveni & Besigye. In 2011, Buganda had Dr Abed Bwanika, Bidandi Sali & Beti Kamya still they voted for Museveni & Dr Besigye. In 2016 Buganda had Dr Abed Bwanika & Eng Mabirizi, Buganda voted for Besigye & Museveni.
Even at local levels, we have seen non Baganda in the KCCA council, even MPs like Hon Fred Ruhindi, Hon Kabaziguruka etc representing people in Kampala when they are not necessarily Baganda. The likes of Singh Katongole, Nyakana, Salim Uhuru etc are not from Buganda. Even Hon Munyagwa Mubarak who has been representing Kawempe South is born & raised from Kitagwenda in Tooro.
We have as well had the same scenario in districts like Mubende, Nakasongola, Kyotera, Lyantonde, Nakaseke Sembabule, Rakai, Lwengo, Gomba, Bukomansimbi, Mpigi, Wakiso, Masaka, Kyankwanzi, Kasanda, Kiboga, Mityana etc where non baganda have been elected to in local governments & Parliament, so how would one blackmail the Baganda for being sectarian this time yet all the time they have voted for other tribes & NRM?
Mr Museveni should know that Buganda has got it's own challenges which haven't been attended to. Museveni knows very well that he fought his war in Buganda especially in Luwero, Nakasongola, Nakaseke,Kiboga & Kyankwanzi. Many children of Baganda were either killed or joined his struggle. It's an embarrassment to Museveni when those people on whose blood he is thriving are riding boda boda, hawking, doing sports betting, working as bouncers at night clubs & askaris at the gates of rich people!
It's a shame that after 35 years you still have a ministry for Luwero Triangle to cater for the rehabilitation of those affected by war! They should have been compensated long ago & the ministry should have been removed!
Issues like land grabbing & unemployment have been entrenched in Buganda as a result of urbanisation than any other part of the country.
Buganda used to be a food basket, many people from other regions used to come to work (kupakasa) in coffee & banana plantations of Baganda. The Buganda kingdom county called Buddu (greater Masaka) comes from the word "omuddu" a slave, meaning it was "a place of slaves". This history will tell you that Buganda became civilised & developed before other regions. But Museveni has destroyed Buganda as a nation, shuttered their hopes, dis-empowered their kingdom, grabbed their land, disenfranchised them, killed their economy & turned them into slaves in their own land.
Dominance of people from one region in security forces & other state parastatals has caused people from other regions of the country to feel marginalised. Museveni has caused hate against the people of Western Uganda yet a few specific people from Western have benefited from the NRM & not all of them.
When a Muganda is being arrested for peacefully demonstrating & the one arresting him is a Mwesigye, Mwesigwa, Twinamsiko etc, it sends a message into his subconscious mind. If the same happens even in West Nile, Busoga, Kalamoja etc it obviously causes hate against people of Western region.
So Museveni should not blame anybody but himself because all that we see are results or consequences of his own actions.
Even if the Baganda were voting their own, they are right afterall the westerners have always voted the same way!
In conclusion, Museveni has led this country back to where he found it. If he acknowledges that people voted on tribal basis, it simply means that after 35 years in power, he has successfully brought the country down to where he found it & therefore he has successfully achieved nothing.
Museveni has led our country into crisis & has placed us at crossroads, we must figure out how to remove him from power & find a way out for a better United & a new Uganda.
