President Trump supporters flocked to Washington, DC, ahead of Wednesday’s Congressional vote to certify the results of the presidential race — which the commander in chief continues to dispute.
“Washington is being inundated with people who don’t want to see an election victory stolen by emboldened Radical Left Democrats,” Trump wrote on Twitter Tuesday.
“Our Country has had enough, they won’t take it anymore!” he said. “We hear you (and love you) from the Oval Office. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
“I hope the Democrats, and even more importantly, the weak and ineffective RINO section of the Republican Party, are looking at the thousands of people pouring into D.C.,” he wrote in another tweet. “They won’t stand for a landslide election to be stolen.”
Trump also announced he will hold a “Save America Rally” at 11 a.m. Wednesday at The Ellipse lawn in President’s Park near the White House.
Photos and videos from DC showed massive crowds of Trump supporters already gathered in the capital to protest the expected confirmation of former Vice President Joe Biden’s victory.
Hundreds had already gathered at Freedom Plaza by Tuesday afternoon, with the crowds waving Trump signs and flags, and US flags.
More of the president’s supporters are expected to be in the city when Congress votes on certifying the Electoral College results.
The National Park Service said three groups requested permits to protest in the capital, with one group estimating 30,000 people at their gathering, according to WRC-TV.
City officials said they were preparing for possible clashes between the protesters and anti-Trump demonstrators — or any unrest sparked by the president’s supporters.
“Make no mistake,” DC Attorney General Karl Racine told WRC. “Many of these individuals have stated that they are coming to the District to provoke residents and wreak havoc.”
Acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller agreed to deploy the National Guard to the city to assist local law enforcement, CNN said.
However, local officials said the troops will be limited in their duties.
“No DCNG personnel shall be armed during this mission, and at no time, will DCNG personnel or assets be engaged in domestic surveillance, searches, or seizures of US persons,” DC Mayor Muriel Browser told the network.
The Congressional vote has traditionally been largely a formality, but this year some Republicans in the House and Senate, led by Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, said they will contest the results.
