{UAH} LONG TERM BESIGYE FAMILY LAWYER JOINS KYAGULANYI PETITION TEAM
By Mulengera Reporters
Mohammed Mbabazi for many years served as defense lawyer for Col Kizza Besigye and his wife Winnie Byanyima (that was as early as 2001). He was also part of the large team of defense lawyers who represented Besigye and other PRA suspects for the five year period 2001-2006 and beyond.
The same Mohammed Mbabazi, closely working with others like Yusuf Nsibambi, Erias Lukwago & others, was part of the legal team that represented Dr. KB in his presidential election petitions both in 2001 and 2006. Leveraging on that exposure, Mohammed Mbabazi did pretty a good job serving as lead Counsel for Amama Mbabazi's petition in 2016 which, as we know, wasn't successful in overturning the Museveni victory but saw the Court push the executive into undertaking several legislative reforms aimed at improving the quality of electoral processes in this country.
The Kyagulanyi NUP team has taken advantage of this vast experience and profile to craft Mohammed Mbabazi into their legal team to prosecute their election petition to the total detriment of Gen Museveni and his National Resistance Movement (NRM).
Sources say that Mbabazi will be leading the argument in court that Gen Museveni wasn't properly elected because he committed acts of bribery among other irregularities.
Mohammed Mbabazi will also be submitting on the disputed legality of the use of biometric machines without the same being preceded by enactment of enabling law as was directed by the Supreme Court in the case of Amama Mbabazi (there are also recommendations the Supreme Court made under that JPAM ruling which Kyagulanyi wants Court to make a finding on and the team will be relying on Mohamed Mbabazi to make the relevant submissions).
The petitioner (Kyagulanyi) also intends to argue that Gen Museveni wasn't eligible to be nominated to run for the position of President and all the relevant submissions corroborating that will orally be made by Mohammed Mbabazi renowned for his coherence and clarity of words
