{UAH} MBALE AND THE PROBLEM OF STREET CHILDREN
MBALE AND THE PROBLEM OF STREET CHILDREN.
Once again, Mbale city residents and visitors are grappling with increased levels of violence and criminality at the hands of street children. From pick pocketing, snatching bags, theft, robbery and even clobbering people, street children are having their day with no serious response from the authorities.
Recently, one Ali, a resident of Malukhu estate lost his life at the hands of these kids. He was returning from work and found street children robbing someone. When he tried to help, he was beaten to death by these ruthless kids. Boda boda riders are not spared either. Cases of women being raped have been reported.
Most dangerous spots in the city during day are; around clock tower, Upland, around Ashok among other places. Here they can pick pocket or snatch people's bags even during day. At night, Mbale SS, Sleeping Baby, CRO, Wimpy areas and near the traffic lights.
Mbale has always had the problem street children criminality, but not to this margin. The cases have shot up ever since CRO closed down. Even those who were under the process of rehabilitation, have since gone back.
Mbale city authorities need to wake up right now and nip the problem in the bud, before it gets out of hand. They need to work together with residents and solve the problem as soon as possible. By delaying to deal with the problem, street children risk turning into organised criminal and creating no go zones in the city, which will be very hard to deal with. Our leaders still have the chance and time to making Mbale the safest in Uganda and beyond. And that chance and time is now.
