{UAH} MWENGE'S CONTRIBUTION TO TOORO LANGUAGE AND CULTURE
MWENGE'S CONTRIBUTION TO TOORO LANGUAGE AND CULTURE
-------------------------
During that time when Tooro and Bunyoro were still one Kingdom, Mwenge, one of the counties which later made up the Kingdom of Tooro had such high prestige that every prince and princess of the royal house in the kingdom of Bunyoro was brought up in it, so as to learn the dialect of Runyoro spoken by the people there.
But history has it that when going to Tooro to establish a Kingdom of his own, Kaboyo took along with him from Mwenge his father's herds of cattle as well as their herdsmen.
The descendants of the men he went with, the "Bahenda", later on, settled in Burahya where Kabarole is situated. Their language having had a certain prestige, when both Tooro and Bunyoro became Christian and the people there wished to have the Holy Bible translated into their language, Maddox who was asked to do the translation had no alternative but to adopt the language of the people who came from Mwenge as the standard for his work.
It's not just language, the way of dressing, cultural rituals, and ceremonies, character, courage, and determination (Bravery), knowledge, and skill are other areas in which you would trust a Munyamwenge. When you look at Tooro, most of the great minds were born, raised up, or have a hereditary connection to Mwenge. A person from Mwenge has the brains to find the possible means of decent survival.
When it comes to food, which other places enjoy Enswa (White ants), Obutuzi, Entoko(Mushrooms)..? The other foods that we eat like Millet, Cassava, Yams, sweet potatoes, etc are the truest for Energy and other functions. Even these days land and weather are improving enabling us to grow enough Matooke. The Kingdom has also forgotten the historical value of Mwenge, currently, I don't think there is a palace or whether there are enough programs to help Banyamwenge.
