Protect us against climate change
The government of Uganda has decided to exploit oil in the Albertine graben. The challenge is how to minimize the impact arising from the exploitation of oil.
EACOP and government leaders should put in place laws, policies, and regulations to protect the environment, hence responding to climate change and environmental challenges. Climate change, which is the drastic change in weather patterns that leads to drought and floods, poses a huge risk to food security, livelihood, and health of population.
As a result of the essential role rural woman play in food production, they are more prone to being affected by climate change effects than men. Uganda is highly vulnerable to climate change and variability since its economy and the wellbeing of its people are tightly bound to climate.
Basically, climate change is likely to mean increased food insecurity, shifts in the spread of diseases like malaria, typhoid, and coronavirus diseases. Floods damage infrastructure and settlements, hence leading to shifts in the productivity of agricultural and natural resources.
An oil spill strategy has been drafted and air detection equipment has been purchased by NEMA. Many houses, crops, and displacement of animals have happened all due to the exploitation of oil and gas in the Albertine region.
Therefore, there is need to identify and protect the most vulnerable population at country level to protect them against the effects of climate change.
