IS THE CERTIFICATE I GOT FROM THE CLAN AT MY INTRODUCTION PROOF OF MARRIAGE?
Some of you may have noticed that at most customary ceremonies such as the Kwanjula, there is a certificate given to the groom after the bride has introduced him to her family. In most instances, it is from the clan or the kingdom. The question is, in case you need to prove that you are married, can this certificate be used as proof of your marriage?

No, it is not. Marriage Certificates for any traditional marriage are supposed to be issued by either the Sub County Chief or the Town Clerk of that area. That certificate issued by the clan at the Kwanjula or traditional wedding ceremony is mostly for ceremonial purposes, but it has no validity under the law since it is not an official document.
