{UAH} WHAT HAPPENS TO AN ID WHEN SOMEONE DIES?

WHAT HAPPENS TO AN ID WHEN SOMEONE DIES?

Nancy was married to TAATA MAJO, a renowned plumber in Kyebando. Unfortunately, in December 2018, during a plumbing installation at ZALWANGO AND DAUGHTERS' CATERING SCHOOL, a metallic 10,000 litres   water tank fell on Taata Majo killing him instantly. The family gave him a befitting burial. Nancy is now a widow and has not remarried yet.

In July 2019, Nancy was contacted by a lady that participated in registering members of Kyebando for National identity cards in 2018. Taata Majo had indicated Nancy as his next of Kin on the form for registration for the National ID. The lady told Nancy to pick her late husband's national ID at the gombola offices in Kyebando. Nancy now wonders if it is worth her time picking up the national ID from the gombolola offices.

WHAT IS A NATIONAL ID?

It is a document issued by the government of a country to its citizens so that they can use it as a means of confirming their identity. In Uganda, National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) issues National IDs on behalf of the government.

The law in Uganda requires a citizen to carry an ID (or a copy) as a means of confirming their identity where the need arises such as at night or you may be arrested for being idle and (possibly) disorderly.

WHAT HAPPENS TO A PERSONS NATIONAL ID ONCE THEY DIE?

When someone dies, the law says that the person's ID expires and has not use before the law. Therefore, when a person dies, the family members of the deceased are required to inform NIRA of the death and get a death certificate. Once this is done, that is when the ID is cancelled in the system.

In the case of Nancy who is asked by a member of NIRA to pick the National Identity of her deceased husband  she may as well not pick it up because it automatically lost its importance under the law.
