{UAH} Govt should protect environment

Govt should protect environment

The country is facing the climate change crisis, which needs a serious and quick intervention to maintain a green economy in the country. Most forests are being cleared to establish factories, beaches, farmlands and for agriculture purposes.

A lot of swamps have been degraded to practice agriculture. For example, along Masaka road in Lwera, where the swamp was cleared to grow rice Nyakafumura swamp on River Rwizi, which is being cleared to create farmlands for agriculture
and livestock.

The increasing use of biomass fossil fuels for cooking and industrial use has also contributed the highest percentage of deforestation to get firewood and charcoal for cooking.

About 90 per cent of the population in Uganda uses biomass for cooking and industrial use not because they like fossil fuels but because of high costs of electricity, which can't be afforded by the rural population.

Currently, the amount of greenhouse gasses is increasing in the atmosphere due to increasing fumes from charcoal producers, industries and vehicles, among others.

The wildlife is being affected due to destruction of their habitat to create lands for farming. This affects the tourism industry.

The government of Uganda should develop options to restore the degraded forest and wetlands reserves in the country. The National Environment Management Authority should arrest all the people that are encroaching on wetland and forest reserves and bring them to book.

All investors with licenses to establish business in wetlands and in forest reserves should be cancelled and vacate immediately. The ministry should also establish tree nursery beds at all sub-county levels where the population can pick seedlings for planting.
