In a horrifying turn of events, a popular beach in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, was the scene of a brutal suicide bombing and gun attack, resulting in the death of at least 32 individuals and injuring scores more.

The attack, which took place on Friday, saw a dramatic increase in the death toll from an initial count of seven, according to police spokesperson Abdifatah Adan Hassan. He revealed that "about 63" civilians were injured, with several in critical condition.

As reported by the Daily Mail, the gruesome aftermath of the attack was captured in footage showing bodies scattered across the ground, with injured individuals crying out for help. Amidst the chaos, ambulance vans raced through the busy streets, while security forces swiftly responded to the crisis. The police reported that "all five gunmen Kharijites" were neutralized, a reference to the Al-Qaeda linked Al-Shabaab jihadist group. This organization has been relentlessly waging a bloody insurgency against the government for over 17 years.

Officer Mohammed Omar provided further details, stating that a sixth member of the group "blew himself at the beach." He recounted the chilling scene, saying, "The merciless terrorists shot civilians randomly and I saw seven dead bodies along the beach." The bomber detonated his device along Lido Beach, a location favored by business people and officials, and a site of previous attacks. Following the explosion, gunmen stormed the area, causing widespread panic among the crowd.

Eyewitness Abdilatif Ali described the terrifying moments following the blast, "Everybody was panicked and it was hard to know what was happening because shooting started soon after the blast." He observed people attempting to take cover or flee the scene, with many lying wounded or dead on the ground. Officer Omar added that while there were wounded individuals, "most of the civilians were rescued by the security forces."

Ahmed Yare, another witness who was at a nearby hotel, recounted the horrifying scene, "I saw wounded people at the beach side, people were screaming in panic, and it was hard to notice who was dead and who was still alive." Mohamud Moalim, another witness, told the Associated Press that he saw an attacker wearing an explosive vest moments before the man "blew himself up next to the beach-view hotel." Moalim revealed that some of his friends were among the casualties.

Former Somali Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire expressed his condolences on Twitter/X, noting the timing of the attack on a night when the beach was particularly crowded. He wrote, "The fact that the terrorist attack coincides with this night when the beach is the most congested shows the hostility of the terrorists to the Somali people."

The Al-Shabaab group claimed responsibility for the assault on a pro-Shabaab website late on Friday. The group, notorious for its numerous bombings and attacks in Mogadishu and other parts of the country, was pushed back in government counteroffensives since 2022. However, they remain capable of launching significant attacks on government, commercial, and military targets.

This latest attack follows a powerful car bomb blast at a café in the capital last month, which claimed five lives. In March, the militants killed three people and wounded 27 in an hours-long siege of a Mogadishu hotel, breaking a relative lull in the fighting. These relentless attacks underscore the ongoing threat posed by Al-Shabaab, a group that continues to disregard the sanctity of human life in its ruthless pursuit of power.
