{UAH} NRM leaders exchange blows over registrar

Kyenjojo.

Kyenjojo District NRM leaders were on Monday involved in fist fighting over the appointment of a new party district registrar.

The district chairperson, who is also the National Resistance Movement party chairperson, Mr James Byamukama, had nominated Mr Stephen Muhumuza to the post.

However, during a regional meeting at Kagote SDA conference centre to kick-start the NRM registration exercise on Monday, Winnie Kendege Ngobi was introduced as the district NRM registrar.

Mr Byamukama queried how a person who was not nominated by the district NRM executive committee was appointed as the party's district registrar.

Mr Byamukama and the delegation from Kyenjojo District stormed out of the meeting to consult each other on the next move.

However, the situation turned violent when the district NRM vice chairperson, Fr Leo Balyabuza, disagreed with the Nyantungo Sub-county NRM chairperson, Mr Sankito Katuura.
They exchanged blows at the same meeting.
Mr Byamukama claimed Winnie Ngobi is weak and cannot effectively manage the office she was appointed to.

He asked the national NRM deputy treasurer, Dr Kenneth Omona, to give the NRM leaders in Kyenjojo at least one week to look for a better alternative to Ms Ngobi.

Mr Aston Kajara, the Mwenge South MP, insisted Ms Ngobi is their party's district registrar and no other person would be nominated for the post.

Dr Omona urged the NRM leaders to reach a compromise and added that the party constitution gives the secretary general powers to appoint and remove district registrars without consulting anyone.

He said he does not have powers to reject or change what his boss had decided.
Mr Byamukama said even though the constitution gives the secretary general powers to appoint a district registrar, the district NRM leaders are not supposed to be ambushed with a strange candidate the district did not nominate.
Mr Byamukama stormed out of the meeting in protest against Ms Ngobi's appointment.

Registration
The NRM's membership registration was launched on April 28 in northern Uganda by President Museveni, the party chairman.

According to the party secretariat, the target is to complete the mass registration process, including the display of the new register by July 12.
