14th -15th October 2015 Conference highlights

-          Get centralised base maps and then produce different type of maps for better planning.  These maps which are crucially needed are hydrological maps, industrial and human settlement maps, infrastructure, environment and utility maps

-         Start thinking hard about a common transport system and mobility plan investment for sustainable development and urban planning strategy for East and Central Africa. Transport system should focus on modern seamless light train technologies connecting different nodes in the East and Central African region, radial and grid system could gradually out phased since it based on old technologies.

-      Investment in smartcities was resolved will improve life quality, lower cost of doing business, improve service delivery

-          Get blue print for an East and Central African urban planning strategy that will include among others a shared vision about planning human settlements, resource allocation, focusing on key priority areas, urban infrastructure investment, common transport systems

-          Discouraging systematic urban engineering but rather focus on organic and inclusive or integrated urban planning

-          Transport, Energy, Houses, Urban Technologies/Smartcities futures prominently as sectors for immediate investment consideration

-          Start Research to understand how sustainable human settlement will be organised based on the above seamless transport technologies and dweller full participation. It was resolved to find ways as to how investments could be done using build own Transfer (BOT) or other business models

-   Urban environmental issues futured prominently. Key areas were pointed  for investment: water, lake shore protection, clean transport systems, solid and liquid urban waste, generation of electricity out of urban waste

-     Reduction of rural population by 70 % could save the environment by reducing use of trees as fuel, land fragmentation and changing land ownership system to mitigate hindrances to planning possibilities.

-          Get started with smart cities to ease cost and waste in urban planning.
