Stranded NRM delegates camp at party offices, demand facilitation
Over 400 stranded NRM supporters have camped at the party head offices at Kyadondo plot 10, demanding for their facilitation for the just concluded delegates conference.
Some of the party supporters, who included district councillors that Daily Monitor managed to talk said they had been promised by the party leaders Shs500, 000 to cater for their transport and other needs.
"But up to now, they have not yet sorted us. How do they expect us to travel back to our homes? We have been sleeping on the streets hungry. The NRM Deputy National Treasurer, Dr Kenneth Omona yesterday said he would clear us today (Monday) which has not happened yet," said Ms Doreen Bambu, the NRM Vice Chairperson Kasese district.
Ms Bambu said they petitioned speaker of parliament over the matter and she "advised us to come here (at the party main headquarters)."
The infuriated supporters have also locked the office of the party Secretary General Ms Justine Lumumba, prompting police to deploy heavily.
According to police, NRM has disowned them saying they are not genuine party members.
"The top management here claims that these people are not genuine supporters of the party. We raised concerns with the party's key stakeholders who also denied knowing them," said Mr Brian Ampire, a police officer that this newspaper talked to at the scene.
However, Ms Bambu wondered how they were cleared to attend the delegates' conference if the party leadership thought they were not genuine party members.
"How were we able to attend the delegates conference if were are imposters like they claim," argued Ms Bambu, displaying her party and accreditation cards for the just concluded delegates conference.
