I think one of the things that upsets me the most about how people "criticize" Islam is the way in which they portray Muslim women as being universally oppressed automatons with no sense of individuality, purpose, or even the capacity for rational thought.
I am deeply offended by this, because it deeply offends my wife.
The person I married only a few years ago, who not only has the same level of education as me, but who manages to run her own business, who is fluent in 5 languages, who teaches me Qur'an, who insists on cleaning the house and cooking (despite my protests), who makes me laugh and smile throughout the day, who treats me with respect and kindness despite me making less money than her and not always having enough left over to buy her that new perfume she wants, who fights with me, but doesn't care after an hour or so, and who sees herself as independent and strong at my side...
This person is considered "uncivilized" and "imprisoned", unable to speak for herself, and too intellectually impotent to object. And no matter how she lives or what she says, she is always perceived in this way by people who don't know her nor care about her in the slightest -- who only want to use her image for the sake of validating their own unsubstantiated superiority complexes -- despite the fact that she has done more for herself, her family, and this world than any of these irrelevant keyboard warriors will be remembered for in their entire existence.
We are deeply offended; deeply offended that the only way for the value of a Muslim woman to be heard is through her husband, because the haters won't be curious to read it otherwise. We are deeply offended that she cannot write this post herself, because none of the haters will take her words seriously. We are deeply offended that even as her husband post this, they still won't take her seriously, because they think he's "lying".
We are deeply offended that in their desire to "free" her, they have ironically constructed her prison -- and nothing will satisfy them unless she gives up her individuality and becomes exactly like them.
