HOW DO U CALL THIS INSECT IN YOUR OWN LANGUAGE?

Praying mantis is a type of an insect which is closely related to termites and cockroaches. You may never have seen one but we will bring them to you with our interesting praying mantis facts on today's Nature and Wildlife.

1. The word 'mantis' means prophet or fortuneteller in Greek. The praying mantis earns its name due to its prayer-like posture especially when it raises its seemingly reverent forelegs. Scientists have recorded more than 2,400 different species of praying mantis.

2. You might have heard that birds feed on insects but how about if it happens the other way round. Mantises are the only insects that feed on birds and hummingbird are their primary preys. Their diets also consist of insect and rodents.

3. Sex could be a journey of no return for male mantises because female mantises kill and eat the male either during or after mating. She bites the head off the male.

4. Praying mantises have five eyes out of which two are compound eyes while three are simple eyes. They have one ear which is located in the centre of their chest. With their ear, they can be able to pick up sounds that even humans can't hear.

5. One interesting feature of mantises is the fact that they are able to turn their head 180 degrees for excellent vision and hearing. No other insect known to man has the ability to do that.

6. Praying mantis use their specialized forelegs to capture preys. While waiting for preys, they fold their legs in prayer. The angelic pose enables it to extend its forelegs with lightning quick speed and grab its prey.

7. Praying mantises are supremely gifted when it comes to camouflage; they are able to change colours to blend in with the environment. They have been confused with leaves and sticks by their preys.

8. Praying mantises can go full zombie. When they capture birds, they go straight for the brains.

9. Praying mantis predators include lizards, frogs, spiders and big birds.

10. Mantises are masters in defence. When threatened, it will stand on its hind legs and spread its front legs to scare the predators. When that doesn't work, it will strike using its front legs and try to bite and pinch the predators.
