In Summary
- According to the prosecution, samples from the crime scene where Kaweesa killed Nakabugo matched the DNA where many other women were killed.
The victims were often raped and their property stolen by the killers.
Two more suspects in the murder of more than 20 women in Wakiso District two years ago were arraigned before the High Court for trial following the conviction of their accomplice Ibrahim Kaweesa who was on Monday sentenced to life in prison.
Kaweesa is also linked to more murders of 12 women in Entebbe and Nansana municipalities.
The suspects: Eric Ssegawa and Ismail Nyanzi are alleged to have worked with Kaweesa in murdering Stella Nanfuka on May 24, 2017.
The three are also accused of murdering Regina Namuli on May 25, 2017.
Adjournment
Yesterday, Segawa and Nyanzi were brought to the High Court to plead to the charges but the case was adjourned to Tuesday next week because Kaweesa, their co-accused, had not been presented in court.
Defence lawyer Zephania Zzimbe asked the trial judge Damalie Lwanga to adjourn the case because Kaweesa was absent.
"Court is hereby adjourned until October 1 and a production warrant for Kaweesa is hereby issued," Justice Lwanga ruled.
Court sources indicated that apart from Monday's conviction where Kaweesa was proved to have killed Annet Nakabugo, he faces 11 more charges of murder by strangulation after raping the victims.
It is alleged that Kaweesa raped Patricia Nansubuga, Teddy Nakacwa, Josephine Nakazibwe, Juliet Nampijja alias Jalia Nantabazi, Maria Birungi, Juliet Kyandali, Gorreti Nansubuga, among others.
The linking of Kaweesa to the said 12 murders was based on semen extracted from him which matched the semen found in all the deceased victims he is accused of killing.
According to the prosecution, samples from the crime scene where Kaweesa killed Nakabugo matched the DNA where many other women were killed.
The victims were often raped and their property stolen by the killers.
The killing of the more than 20 women left the country in consternation.
