{UAH} RIGHT TO MENTAL HEALTH OF WOMEN IN UGANDA

RIGHT TO MENTAL HEALTH OF WOMEN IN UGANDA

Did you know that according to the World Health Organisation, 4 out of every 10 persons in our community suffer a depressive illness? Of these, women are the most affected. Many women who have just given birth, suffer from an illness known as post-natal depression.

In Uganda, the right to health is a fundamental right which should not be taken lightly. It includes the right to the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health. The right requires participation of the population in all health-related decision-making in the community.

It also calls for realization of all rights and forms the basis for enjoyment of other rights for example if the right to health is taken away from you, you may end up losing the right to life. By virtue of a woman being a Ugandan, they have the right to enjoy adequate healthcare, infrastructure including well equipped hospitals, access to community health facilities, trained healthcare professionals, drugs, and standard health services. These should be available in all geographic areas and to everyone in the community regardless of gender.

Health care providers are expected to respect, provide appropriate care and be responsive to the needs of these women regardless of age, culture, way of life and abilities. Women's privacy must be upheld through medical ethics and with high standards of confidentiality.

It is our duty to protect them because they are the carriers of future generations.

How are women treated in the health facilities you visit?
