{UAH} NEWS WHY SECURITY GRABBED SEKIKUBO LIKE CHICKEN THIEF THIS MORNING

By Mulengera Reporters

This Friday morning, plain clothed security operatives stormed Rwemiyaga Town Council and dramatically whisked away MP Theodore Sekikubo who was preparing to lead a demonstration by his electors demanding to know why the two cattle markets of Rwemiyaga and Rumengyere (in his Rwemiyaga County Constituency) have remained closed (quarantined) for the last four years. Quarantining means business is closed and cattle keepers can't have where to competitively sell their cattle. Justifiable on grounds there is an outbreak that needs to be contained by restricting cattle movements, the quarantine is always imposed by the relevant Commissioner in the Ministry of Agriculture where Joy Kabatsi (who is coming to challenge Sekikubo in 2021) has been the line livestock Minister for the last three years.

The argument of Sekikubo (MP for Rwemiyaga for the last 20 years), who is facing NIRA Finance Director Patrick Kateeba besides Kabatsi and two others for the NRM flag, is that it's unfair and an act of double standards to restrict only cattle movements yet those selling milk and other products from the same cattle are still operating without being subjected to the quarantine. So, the vocal MP who has been lately camping in the Constituency where he has so far spent Shs450m (realized from the sell of 25 trucks of cattle to the Lufula in Kampala), this morning set out to lead his people to protest this apparent unfairness and double standards by MAAIF authorities. Some of the military personnel that participated in the anti-Sekikubo operation came from Kabamba and Masaka armored brigade.

And before they could even begin their demo, area police (working with reinforcements from sister agencies like the military that was represented by plain clothed men) stormed the area and dramatically grabbed a screaming Sekikubo like chicken thief. Even when he suffers declining popularity naturally resulting from a prolonged incumbency, Sekikubo remains extremely popular in Rwemiyaga Town Council because that is the native place where he has grown up and where his political story started from. In apprehending him, the police justified their actions by saying that at Sekikubo's instigation, supporters and aggrieved cattle sellers planned violence mainly targeting milk dairies that continue to operate despite the quarantine. On being subdued, Sekikubo was rushed to Masaka Police Station where he remains incarcerated.

Prior to today's events, Sekikubo had reached out to Speaker Kadaga calling for Parliamentary intervention against Security Minister Gen Elly Tumwine whom he accused of working towards undermining him politically in favor of Minister Joy Kabatsi who claims the President has sent her to liberate Rwemiyaga from the Sekikubo political madness. In his pleadings to the Speaker, Sekikubo claimed that Gen Tumwine and other Kabatsi backers were using the quarantine to undermine the economic livelihood of people in his constituency.

But critics, backing his opponents, have backed the action against Sekikubo whom they accuse of being a selfish leader who doesn't genuinely care about this people. Such critics wonder why Sekikubo (himself a wealthy cattle keeper grazing on over 3 square miles Kabagoma village Ntyazo parish, Mpumudde village Makole parish & Rwamakara village in Rwemiko parish) has been silent and not protesting the quarantine which has been in force for 4 years now. They claim the motive is political; that he is intervening now to reap political capital on the eve of the upcoming NRM party primaries. Such critics advise Sekikubo to carry his own cross rather than putting blame on the likes of Tumwine whose only interest in the Rwemiyaga conflict is security of the area residents and their property.
