By Mulengera Reporter

Government has confirmed the untimely death of James Saka, the former Managing Director National Information Technology Authority (NITA). In a statement, Judith Nabakooba, the Minister of Information Technology and National Guidance said the government and the people of Uganda are mourning the death of Saka. She described Saka as one of the smartest citizens in Information Technology. Sources said Saka succumbed to COVID-19 on Wednesday afternoon at Mulago hospital where he had been admitted.

Saka was the founding Director of NITA in 2010. He led Uganda's digital revolution that has enabled Uganda to change the way we live life and do business. "His digital revolution saw the implementation of Uganda's backbone infrastructure that has significantly reduced the cost of internet," Nabakooba said.

She added that in 2013 shortly after he had started his work with NITA, the cost of internet was US dollars 1200. She added that by the time he retired in 2020, the cost was at about 70 US dollars and continuing to fall.

"He worked hard to ensure that public institutions like government offices, hospitals, schools, and many others were connected to the internet. By the time of his death, Uganda was ranked as the most digital secure country in the world," she added. Nabakooba extended condolences to the family of Saaka adding that her Ministry of ICT and NITA pledge to upload Saaka's legacy by taking forth his vision for a fully digitized country.
