{UAH} DOES AN ARREST DIMINISH YOUR RIGHTS AS A UGANDAN?

Sometimes people conclude that because of what they may be accused of such people do not have the same rights as other Ugandans. However, this is grossly inaccurate. So let us remind ourselves about what the law says.
First and foremost, the Ugandan law looks at you as being innocent until you are proven guilty in a court of law ( this is what we call the presumption of innocence). since you are presumed to be innocent, the law gives you a number of rights ( entitlements) even when you are/ will be or have been suspected or arrested:
1. Your entitlement (right) to know the reason for your arrest and to know who is arresting you.
2. Your entitlement (right) to notify your family, lawyers about your arrest and where you are detained.
3. Your entitlement (right) to consult with your lawyer on way forward and your defense.
4. An entitlement (right) to be presented before a court of law within 48 hours of your arrest or to request for police bond for certain offences.
If you come across some friends who may have forgotten this short list please politely remind them of it so that together we can all uphold the rule of law because the Constitution is the supreme law of Uganda
